Sabich (in Hebrew: סביח), for those of you who don’t know, is one of the most popular food items in Israel. The sabich is a pita stuffed with fried eggplant, hard boiled egg, humus, tahin, vegetables and other things, whatever you like. It was first made by the Jews of Iraq and became very popular here in Israel. If you haven’t tasted it yet, you must try it!
Today, a few hours before Simchat Torah began, two friends and I decided to make our way to Mechane Yehuda Market (the “Shuk”) to buy some things. When we arrived, they suggested that we go eat sabich. I’ve never eaten sabich in Jerusalem before, so I let them show me the way to “the best sabich in town”, as they called it.
Aricha Sabich (אריכא סיח) is located on Agripas Street, opposite the “Shuk”. It’s a small restaurant, specializing only in sabich. On the wall, you can see their menu: sabich in a pita (19 Shekels), sabich on a plate (26 Shekels) and sabich with stir-fried portobello mushrooms (24 Shekels). We decided to pick the classic and cheapest one – the one in the pita. You can also order some drinks.
When we arrived at Aricha Sabich , it was full of people. Wwe paid at the cashier and waited for our turn to pick the fillings. I asked for everything, except for the hot spice. So the man behind the glass took a pita and shoved everything into it. I’m not even sure what everything was…
Then we sat down to eat and WOW, it was delicious! The best sabich I’ve eaten so far. Extremely messy, but delicious. Good thing they have napkins. It was a wonderful lunch and at a great price! Perfect for backpackers who want to get a delicious and cheap meal.
So where is it? Agripas 83, opposite Mechane Yehuda Market.
How much will it cost you? I recommend taking the classic sabich in a pita, which will cost you only 19 Shekels, unless they’ll decide to change prices.
